Liddell Entertainment & Roadside Attractions Snag U.S. Rights
Summer hasn’t even started to wind down yet, and blockbusters are already getting looked over in favor of Oscar predictions and upcoming fall festivals. It seems like every other day this year’s Oscar race is picking up with the “War Horse” trailer hitting last week and The Weinstein Company already staking out their fall dates. Though it’s small news, it looks to be big for the Best Actress category as earlier today it was announced that “Albert Nobbs,” starring Glenn Close was picked up for distribution by Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions with a fall awards season release and campaign in the works.
The film centers on Close’s titular character, a woman that tries to pass for a man in 19th century Ireland in order to make her living. Directed by acclaimed Colombian writer/director Rodrigo Garcia (“In Treatment,” “Mother and Child“), ‘Nobbs’ also stars it girl Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Janet McTeer, Pauline Collins, Brenda Fricker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Brendan Gleeson. Interestingly enough, Close already played this character in an off-Broadway production in the early ’80s, nabbing an Obie Award in the process. She also contributed to the screenplay alongside Gabrielle Prekop and John Banville, and she will co-produce with Bonnie Curtis, Julie Lynn and Alan Moloney.

Liddell and Roadside partnered last year on the distribution of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu‘s “Biutiful,” scoring Javier Bardem a Best Actor nomination for his role as an ailing father. Roadside Attractions has become a hot distributor for small indie fare, including last year’s Oscar nominee “Winter’s Bone.” As long as Close pulls out all the stops, they should have no problem pushing this one through come Oscars season.
