The last few years have seen some serious improvements from the Emmy Awards’ nomination committees. Once a hop, skip and a jump from being a total joke in their repetitive rewarding of the same old shit, this morning’s nominees were very much out with the old, in with the new… mostly in awesome ways. Despite a few glaring omissions (cough, “Treme,” “The Walking Dead,” the supporting cast of “Parks & Recreation,” cough), I don’t think I’ve ever been so pleased.
-“Parks and Recreation” for best comedy series.
-Louie CK for best comedy actor (and the show for a writing nod).
-“Friday Night Lights” for series, actor AND actress.
-Martha Plimpton for best comedy actress.
-Elisabeth Moss over January Jones for best drama actress (for the win, svp).
-“Justified”‘s Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins and Margo Martindale ALL get nominated.
-Every single adult cast member of “Modern Family” deservedly gets a nomination.
-Idris Elba gets TWO nominations to makeup for 5 years of getting fucked over when he was on “The Wire”.
-“Mad Men”‘s Randee Heller for best guest actress as Miss Blankenship.
-Directing nominations for Neil Jordan, Patty Jenkins, Martin Scorsese, Todd Haynes, Jeremy Podeswa, Olivier Assayas, Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini, Todd Haynes and Curtis Hanson.
-The fact that Pee-Wee Herman, Carrie Fisher, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler are competing against each other in the Outstanding -Variety, Music Or Comedy Special category.
Not too shabby, Emmys… I might even watch you this year.
