Comic-Con: Relativity's Haywire Panel with Ass-Kicking Carano, Soderbergh Disses Retirement Rumors

Haywire star Gina Carano can clearly kick ass, judging from the trailer and clip Relativity shared this afternoon in Hall H. Director Steven Soderbergh and co-stars Channing Tatum and Michael Fassbender can all corroborate (Soderbergh, Carano and Tatum were at the panel; the film also stars Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Angarano). Here’s more project details; synopsis and panel quotes are also below, along with Soderbergh’s response to those pesky retirement rumors.

Soderbergh discovered Carano watching her MMA fights on TV. He thought, “why didn’t someone build a movie around her?” He decided to do it himself. Carano picked him up from the train station with a black eye, and at the end of what Carano calls “an amazing four hour conversation” with Soderbergh told her “it’s either going to happen really fast or it’s not going to happen at all.” After that it came together very quickly.

Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, which Soderbergh piqued his interest in doing by calling it “a female revenge movie.” Hatching the story was then a collaborative process that included Soderbergh and Carano. They premiered the trailer (below) to a very impressed crowd. Carano has fans, and she’ll have plenty more after this. It’s not clear what level her acting chops are, but anyone who can kick Fassbender and Tatum’s asses while looking hot will earn respect.

“I felt it would be interesting and unusual if [we] created a female character who performed physically, for real. No doubles, no cutting away,” says Soderbergh. They all did their own stunts in very detailed choreography. Soderbergh says he’s never done fights like this before, but says:”The rule was it had to be real…the result is that [the film’s] fights are shorter than you’re probably used to seeing in movies…[in a realistic fight scene] somebody’s gonna get the drop kick and it’s over.” Although the guys wore a little padding, Soderbergh admits he could tell with Fassbender’s scenes that; “those pads weren’t really a lot of help.”

“She actually knocked someone out in rehearsal,” says Tatum. He asked her to hit him harder at one point: “It was a challenge and I lost.” He was inspired during the shoot: “It’s always a pleasure to work with people who commit like [she did].” Considering the ‘nice guys don’t hit girls’ rule, when Tatum needed to hit Carano with a ketchup bottle in the opening scene, he didn’t want to. But then, he says: “she called me a female p-word and then I had to do it for my manity,..But then she hit me twice as hard and I didn’t want to hit her anymore…She pretty much kicked my ass.”

Carano says shooting was “a crazy adrenalin rush every day.” She adds: “I had to learn a lot about acting. It was like Acting 101. It actually ruined movies for a couple months for me, but now I appreciate them even more. [Acting] is definitely a skill and not everyone is capable of doing it.” Carano loved the physicality of shooting the film: “I just loved getting banged into all that stuff, that was a blast.” The audience ate that up.

SPOILER ALERT: Soderbergh says Carano really “killed Michael Fassbender for real” in the film’s hotel room scene (which they showed). After getting his ass kicked, “he laughed about it,..a little,” says Soderbergh. Lets just say shooting the scene didn’t go well for Fassbender, nor does it end well for him in the film.

Now, about those rumors that Steven Soderbergh is retiring, he says, “Matt Damon is apparently as about discreet at a fourteen-year old girl,..I had this drunked conversation with him in Chicago and four days later it was in the paper,..He remembered it verbatim,..I was just [drunk and] going off…it kind of got blown out of proportion there, and its’ Matt’s fault.”
