Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim Cast Shaping Up: Day, Hunnam, Elba and Kikuchi

Babel Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi joins Horrible Bosses breakout Charlie Day, Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, the director’s return to the helm for the first time since his Oscar-nominated Pan’s Labyrinth.

Warner Bros.’ Rim won’t hit theaters until July 12, 2013 (lensing starts this November). After that the director, who will present his Troy Nixey’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark at Comic-Con’s Hall H on July 20, should return to a more consistent output after his long sojourn in Wellywood writing and prepping The Hobbit, which Peter Jackson has taken over.

Del Toro is now attached to direct several projects including remakes of Universal’s Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He still wants to resurrect his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness–after 2013.

Del Toro says of Rim: “This is my most un-modest film, this has everything. The scale is enormous and I’m just a big kid having fun,” while ThePlaylist offers this synopsis:

[It] will tell the story of Raleigh Antrobus, who along with his brother, piloted Jaegers, enormous building-sized robots constructed to fight off the malevolent creatures, driven telepathically by a pair of specially-trained pilots, working in tandem against giant sea monsters emerging from the Pacific Ocean, wreaking havoc on a number of cities. Yes, this thing will be a monster both literally and figuratively.

If you’ve wondered where Kikuchi has been, she just shot 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves, currently in post (out November 2012). ThePlaylist guessed it would be her, after reading the Rim script (written by Clash of the Titans‘ Travis Beacham).
