Last night in Toronto, hundreds of queers gathered for the first annual “Toronto Queer Beer Festival,” which I headed into pretty enthusiastically. A festival of alcohol exclusively for queers? Toronto’s War on Fun: 878, Fun: 1! Not to mention the kicker: The headliner at the event, which basically saw 100 or so beer vendors surrounding a big stage at Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition grounds, was none other than ACE OF BASE.
Or, it should be noted, Ace.of.Base, as they are now officially known. And why is that? Well, unbeknownst to a good chunk of folks who showed up ready to belt out “The Sign,” the band only consists of 2 of its original 4 members. The two original women – Malin Berggren and Jenny Berggren, who sang any part of any Ace of Base song you’d remember – are no longer, and have been replaced by Clara Hagman and Julia Williamson, both of whom were FOUR YEARS OLD when “The Sign” was released. So basically, it was an Ace of Base cover band.
As bizarre as that was, after 20 queer beers, no one in the audience seemed to care:
