Best Movies To Watch During A Hurricane

Sure, you’ve got water, food, an escape plan — but your hurricane preparedness isn’t complete unless you’ve stockpiled the right movies to watch while you’re hunkered down during the storm. Even if you’re not in the path of Hurricane Irene, you can do some sympathetic viewing.

Make sure the batteries in your computer or portable DVD player are fully charged in case of power outages – does the Weather Channel bother to tell you that? No – and settle in with these ideal distractions. It’s not as if you can go anywhere.

If you have to be caught in a storm, George Clooney might as well be there. In fact. if he were, that probably would make a storm perfect. He may not show up at your door to save you in real life, but there’s plenty of suspense and raging wind (not all of it coming from the actors’ mouths) in this fine adventure film that holds a mirror up to the nature howling all around you.

Earthquakes, hurricanes – did someone mention global warming? Be consoled by the fact that whatever is happening outside your window is probably less extreme than this, as Jake Gyllenhaal tries to survive the apocalyptic water and ice engulfing New York City. Let’s hope the real hurricane doesn’t give anyone reason to match the film’s drama, and ride out the storm in the abandoned reading room of the New York Public Library (it is pretty there.)

TOP HAT (1935)

There once was an innocent era when the words “global” and “warming” didn’t even make sense together, and in one of the best Astaire-Rogers films, he sang “Isn’t This A Lovely Day (To Be Caught in the Rain).” Shut out today’s problems and dance around with them.

Go in the other direction: all that desert scenery is bound to make you feel parched, no matter how much water falls. David Lean’s classic is one of the best movies ever, with Peter O’Toole at his most glorious. It has the extra advantage of being very long. The hurricane will pass in no time.
