David Cronenberg & Pedro Almodovar Get Galas at 49th New York Film Festival

David Cronenberg & Pedro Almodovar Get Galas at 49th New York Film Festival

In a first for the New York Film Festival, two galas will join the Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Night galas, rounding out the total of gala screenings to five, The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today. The two films set to screen are David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” (Wednesday, October 5) and Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In” (Wednesday, October 12).

The two hotly anticipated films join the 49th NYFF lineup, that so far includes Roman Polanski’s Opening Night film “Carnage” and Simon Curtis’ Centerpiece Gala “My Week with Marilyn.”

“We’re delighted to be welcoming David Cronenberg to the festival for the first time and to be welcoming back one of the NYFF’s closest friends, Pedro Almodovar,” said Richard Peña, Selection Committee Chair & Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center. “It’s a special pleasure to introduce our audiences to exciting new work by two of contemporary cinema’s most challenging artists.”

Adapted by Christopher Hampton from his play “The Talking Cure,” Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” chronicles the tenuous relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Keira Knightley has reportedly turned in a show-stopping performance as the beautiful but troubled Sabina Spielrein, who draws both men under her spell.

Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In” premiered in Cannes earlier this year to mixed responses and marks a departure for the Spanish auteur. Antonio Banderas stars in the thriller as a world famous plastic surgeon whose kept young woman imprisoned in his mansion, subjecting her to a bizarre regime of treatments in order to develop a new, tougher human skin.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will announce NYFF’s Closing Night film and the main lineup later this week.

The 49th NYFF runs September 30-October 16.
