indieWIRE's Project of the Day: Jonathan Lisecki is Making a "Gayby"

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

“Gayby”

Tweetable Logline:

Jenn and Matt, best friends since college, decide to have a child together, by having sex — even though Matt is gay and Jenn is straight.

Elevator Pitch:

Jenn and Matt are best friends from college who are now in their 30s. Single by choice, Jenn spends her days teaching hot yoga and running errands for her boss. Matt suffers from comic-book writer’s block and can’t get over his ex-boyfriend. They decide to fulfill a youthful promise to have a child together… the old-fashioned way. Can they navigate the serious and unexpected snags they hit as they attempt to get their careers and dating lives back on track in preparation for parenthood? “Gayby” is an irreverent comedy about friendship, growing older, sex, loneliness, and the family you chose.

Production Team:

Writer/Director: Jonathan Lisecki (“Gayby,” “Woman In Burka”)
Producers: Amy Hobby (“Secretary,” “And Everything Is Going Fine”) and Anne Hubbell (“Lipstick & Dynamite”)
DP: Clay Liford (“Wuss,” “St. Nick”)
Cast: Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas and featuring Catherine Kellner, Jack Ferver, Louis Cancelmi, Mike Doyle, Jennifer Esposito, Dulé Hill, Zach Shaffer, Sarita Choudhury, Joanne Tucker, Alex Karpovsky, Charlie Barnett, Christian Coulson, Sophia Takal, Anna Margaret Hollyman, Adam Driver, Bridget Everett, and Kenny Mellman.

About the Film:

“The idea for Gayby came while fantasizing about how I, as a gay man, could have a child without paying thousands of dollars. The short has screened at over a hundred festivals and won multiple awards. Audiences always ask to see more of these characters. There aren’t a ton of independent comedies. And to agree with something Madeline Olnek just said on iW: If you can make comedy, you should. That said, the kind of comedy I make isn’t exactly goofy and always has political undertones, but I think it can be enjoyed by people who just want to laugh.” — Jonathan Lisecki

Current Status:

The film is currently in pre-production; shooting begins in a few weeks.
