indieWIRE's Project of the Day: Michael Stipe EP'ed Film Explores YouTube Celebrity

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

“ME at the ZOO”

Tweetable Logline:

ME at the ZOO is a feature documentary about Chris Crocker and the phenomenon of Internet celebrity.

Elevator Pitch:

“ME at the ZOO” takes its name from the first ever YouTube video. It’s an unconventional documentary about Chris Crocker, who made the infamous viral video “Leave Britney Alone!” Chris Crocker was bullied out of school in the 8th grade and was, by his account, raised on the Internet. Crocker’s online videos have been viewed over 270 million times to date. ME at the ZOO traces a line through a tapestry of web comments, response videos, fans, and haters to map the controversial rise of an internet folk hero.

Production Team:

Directors/Producers: Chris Moukarbel & Valerie Veatch
Executive Producers: Nicholas Shumaker, Jack Turner, Jim Mckay, Michael Stipe, Rachel Grady

About the Production:

“Chris Crocker’s story is already written on the Internet. Our project as filmmakers has been to trace a line between bits of public media and weave it with an intimate look at Crocker’s life now. Like so many of us, Chris Crocker is uploading his daily experiences and as a member of the ‘Youtube Partnership Program” he is able to monetize the content of his digital life.” — Chris Moukarbel & Valerie Veatch
