“Martin Luther King, Jr. in Palestine” (working title)
Tweetable Logline:
Gospel, camels, MLK and an assassination: a unique perspective on Palestine, amidst a rising tide of non-violent struggle in the Holy Land.
Elevator Pitch:
It’s Arab Spring. We are in one of the most contested regions of the world, plagued by a history of great tragedies, in a place they call The Holy Land. A Palestinian actor plays Martin Luther King, an African-American choir sings gospel, a theater troupe caravans throughout the West Bank. All around them young people are on the move, changing hearts and minds in non-violent struggle for change. In the midst of the journey an assassin strikes, a cultural beacon falls and the border between art and real life blurs.
Production Team:
Director/Field Producer: Connie Field (“Have You Heard From Johannesburg,” “¡Salud!,” “Freedom on My Mind,” Academy Award-nominated “Forever Activists,” “The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter”)
Editor: Gregory Scharpen
About the Production:
“I was asked to go to Palestine to film a play about Martin Luther King, Jr. performed by Palestinians and an African-American gospel choir. I knew a larger film had to be made! I went with virtually no funding. This is a great story, including a growing non-violent movement of young people –bright, social media savvy, deeply committed. American media mostly portrays Palestinians as violent terrorists. A film like this could help change that image, and show nonviolence as an effective struggle that could potentially bring a solution to one of the world’s most contested regions.” — Connie Field
Current Status:
Nearly all of the footage is shot for the film, save for one trip to Palestine. The project is currently moving into the post-production stage.
