“Reinas”

Tweetable Logline:

Every year thousands of Reinas are crowned in the Republic of Panama. No matter height, beauty or size, any woman can become a queen.

Elevator Pitch:

Every year thousands of Reinas are crowned in the Republic of Panama. They are not beauty queens, nor misses; these are women who may work in a bank, a public office or a supermarket, or little girls at schools and even grandmothers at nursing homes. No matter how tall, beautiful, or thin they are, any woman can become a “reina”. A Queen ceremony is serious business in Panama, and an almost-guaranteed activity at any significant celebration. Everyone in the country gets the chance to invest their time, effort, money, vote in selecting his or her very own Queen.

Production Team:

Director: Ana Endara Mislov
Producers: Ana Endara Mislov, Pilar Moreno
Cinematographer: Francisco Malaga

About the Production:

“Queen ceremonies are a cultural and social phenomenon that arouses huge amounts of effort and enthusiasm amongst panamanians, and lies beyond critique or questioning. They have become part of our identity, and they are truly worth portraying. The amount of time, money, energy and creativity that people invest in the production of “reinados” is quite impressive and fascinating. The possibility to obtain a crown is a common dream amongst many Panamanian women. This documentary will explore some issues and questions about this phenomenon; What is the purpose of these ceremonies? Why do we feel this collective need to elect queens?” Ana Endara Mislov

Current Status:

The film is currently in production.
