Fox Searchlight is releasing two chilling new trailers for writer-director Sean Durkin’s Sundance hit Martha Marcy May Marlene–which will be screened at this fall’s Toronto and New York Film Festivals before its opening October 21–but it will be tough to find them. Searchlight isn’t presenting these trailers via your standard online portal premiere. Their access codes will be embedded in unusual ways that have not been tried before–keep your eyes peeled Friday.
I took a peek at both trailers, featuring Elizabeth Olsen (younger sibling to the Olsen twins), who displays her acting chops in this movie, opposite Sarah Paulson (above, with Olsen in this exclusive photo) as her bewildered sister and Winter’s Bone Oscar nominee John Hawkes as the mesmerizing cult leader who haunts Olsen as she tries to escape his clutches.
The first trailer shows Olsen as a young girl variously called Martha, Marcy, May and Marlene by members of not only her real family but the one she joins that is run by Hawkes. The second trailer shows how Hawkes seduces, manipulates and controls the women in his cult, getting them to do things far outside the norm.
