Maybe the Cannes debacle mellowed Lars von Trier, after all.
Sure, his next film is the subtly titled “Nymphomaniac,” which follows the erotic life of a woman from infancy to middle age. But in a von Trier first, he’ll create two versions for theatrical release: one a hardcore cut, the other a softer version tailored for mainstream cinemas.
The director hasn’t shied away from showing sexual penetration before on screen (it’s in the opening scene of “Antichrist”). von Trier’s business partner and producer, Peter Aalbæk Jensen (and co-founder of Zentropa), told ScreenDaily that the film will be shot in English next summer, somewhere outside Denmark.
The announcement comes at a good time for von Trier. A “Nymphomaniac” controversy seems like a wholesome distraction from recent news that von Trier’s “Dogville” is listed on the Facebook page of Anders Behring Breivik, the man responsible for the recent mass murders in Norway, as one of his favorite films.
