Meet Nick Broomfield, Kickstarter.
Documentarian provocateur Nick Broomfield’s latest project, “Sarah Palin: You Betcha!” already has a world premiere berth at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. However, Broomfield is already taking distribution into his own hands.
His goal is to have the film in theatrical distribution “before the potential candidates of 2012 announce their candidacy.” And while many candidates have already announced their intent to run, clearly Broomfield believes he has a very short window in which to act.
So, enter Kickstarter. Broomfield is looking to raise $30,000 by September 3, five days before TIFF begins. Here’s his pitch:
Pledge $50 and you get “Good will and gratitude sent from the indomitable spirit of Wasilla, Alaska;” and if you’re the first person to pledge $600 or more, you’ll receive “Nick’s trademark, one of a kind bullhorn that he uses IN the film, autographed by Nick.”
Speaking of trademarks, the start of this clip from “You Betcha” feels almost comforting in its familiarity. Here’s Broomfield, sitting stony faced at an event from which he knows he will soon be evicted, with his own voiceover: “I couldn’t quite believe I would finally get to ask Sarah a question.”
