Trailer Watch: Scorsese’s George Harrison Doc

Martin Scorsese’s documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World will explore the late, great Harrison’s life as a musician, filmmaker, philanthropist, artist, and arguably the most attractive Beatle. The three-and-a-half hour documentary, which will premiere in two parts at the New York Film Festival before heading to HBO, will include interviews from Harrison’s peers, collaborators, and friends—including Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr, Phil Spector and Tom Petty.

The trailer, posted below, show frenetic shots punctuated by audio-clips discussing Harrison’s hair, India, his fame, and his ambition. With While My Guitar Gently Weeps strumming in the background and the saddest look ever seen on a Beatle one minute in–Harrison talks about seeing himself in the tabloids–this trailer promises a must-see exploration of a much-loved figure.

Four years after the project was announced, this documentary is the latest in Scorsese’s series of rock docs, from The Last Waltz, which captured the 1976’s music zeitgeist via The Band’s unforgettable farewell performance and 2005’s No Direction Home about Bob Dylan to 2008’s Shine a Light featuring the Rolling Stones.

Although Harrison’s widow Olivia was inundated with requests to make a documentary after her husband after he passed away in 2001 from cancer, she agreed to Scorsese’s request based on his previous documentaries. Olivia Harrison had a reservoir of video archives that George had saved, which are included in the film.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World will premiere on October 5 and 6 at the New York Film Festival, before showing on the small screen on HBO. A book of the same title will also be released by Olivia Harrison including photographs, letters, and other mementos from her husband’s life.
