TV Watch: Imagination-Free Networks Are Bewitched, Frankensteined and Nannied

In yet another example of today’s brand-oriented, risk-averse thinking, CBS has hired Marc Lawrence, the mind behind Miss Congeniality, to revamp the popular Bewitched series that ran from 1964 to 1972 on ABC. Lawrence also produced 2005’s widely reviled big-screen version of the show, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

-NBC, in an attempt to revive its line-up, has ordered a script for the ultimate resuscitation story: Frankenstein. Remember The Munsters? Following FX’s lead, the network is turning to the horror genre with this updated version of Mary Shelley’s story, to be written by House executive producers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner.

-And also going back to the well, Weinstein Co, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Seacrest are teaming up to bring a Nanny Diaries series to ABC. The 2002 bestseller about dysfunctional Upper East Siders was already made into a disappointing 2007 feature starring Scarlett Johansson. Now, Weinstein Co is completing a deal to allow Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, to adapt the bestseller. Seacrest will be an executive producer. Let’s hope they have better luck this time.
