Matthew Bate’s raucous documentary “Shut Up Little Man!,” has been making the festival rounds since premiering at Sundance this year and begins hitting theaters starting August 26, courtesy of Tribeca Film. For those who didn’t get to catch it at True/False, New Directors/New Films, or the countless other events it screened at, get a feel for the film by checking out the just-released trailer below.
The clip lays out the bizarre plot: Back in the mid-’80s, two young guys, Eddie and Mitch, moved into a low-rent apartment in San Francisco, where through paper-thin walls, they were made aware of their middle-aged alcoholic neighbors, Raymond (a homophobe) and Peter (a gay man). For the next 18 months, the new tenants recorded the loony conversations between their neighbors by hanging a microphone from their kitchen window. These recordings went on to become sensations on the underground tape market, long before the world “viral” was cool.
From the looks of the well-cut trailer, this has the makings of a fascinating, hilarious and discomforting documentary. Find out whether it’s all three of these things, some, or none, when it hits theaters later this month and throughout September.
