Watch: The Trailer for Award-Winning Skatepunk Doc "Dragonslayer"

“Dragonslayer” has picked up a number of awards this year — grand jury prizes for best documentary and cinematography from SXSW, best international feature from Hot Docs — but what sells the new trailer is a voiceover that sounds like the skatepunk version of the “Choose life” speech from “Trainspotting,” as interpreted by Tyler Durden.

Directed by Tristan Patterson, the footage was shot partially on Flip cameras given to professional skateboarder Skreech and his friends.

The Hot Docs jury lauded the film for its “non-hero, in a capitalistic, nihilistic society in decline.”

The trailer makes an amusing reference to Film Stage’s less-than-favorable review, which also claims, “The point of ‘Dragonslayer’… seems non-existent… Early in the film, it’s clear we aren’t following an interesting subject.” Whether or not that was the intended response, the film seems to wear its nihilistic streak on its sleeve (or, in the case of some of the film’s subjects, lack thereof).

Drag City Films will bring “Dragonslayer” to New York on November 4, with a national release to follow in 2012.
