The teaser trailer for veteran doc director Nick Broomfield’s Sarah Palin expose “You Betcha!” that the Toronto International Film Festival unveiled over the weekend (see below) doesn’t reveal much about the new film, but it offers a sneak peak of Broomfield’s wry style of ambush filmmaking.
After breaking into a Palin town hall meeting, and disparaging the pre-approved questions, Broomfield undercuts Palin’s talk of “Obamacare” and “death panels” with his dry narration. He correctly notes that Palin’s “death panel” rhetoric got her 2009’s “the best lie of the year award” from Politifact. And then Broomfield proceeds to get himself thrown out of the place, Michael Moore-style, by yelling out amidst the crowd of supporters, “Do you think your political career is over?” — to which the Palinistas unsurprisingly drowned out with applause.
I’ll be sure to check out the film, of course, but so far, it doesn’t look like the significant takedown that will ruffle feathers.
In the second clip (see below), Alaska ex-staffers have some slightly unkind things to say, but it’s nothing more than the fact that Palin was often disengaged, too busy texting on her blackberries. Let’s hope the rest of the film will be more hard-hitting.
