Evan Rachel Wood Would Love To Do Action/Super Hero Roles, But Says They Are "Few And Far Between"

Actress Talks Switching Things Up By Taking On Comedy ‘It Is What It Is’

Known for her proclivity towards dark movies and roles (“Down in the Valley,” “True Blood” “Thirteen,” and her truly caustic character in the recent “Mildred Pierce“), her choice in boyfriends (Marilyn Manson) and her stark candidness (see recent comments on her open bisexuality) actress Evan Rachel Wood is hoping to shed some of the preconceived notions the media and the public have about her.

During a press day for George Clooney’s “Ides of March,” in which Wood plays a pivotal role as an intern on the campaign trail of Clooney’s fictional Governor Mike Morris, Wood spoke about the next phase of her career. After having a blast with her vampire queen on “True Blood” Wood hopes to have a chance to do some action and comedy parts. For the latter, Wood will soon fill the void with 2010 Blacklist-ed comedy ensemble “It Is What It Is” — about a group of friends in their mid-20s realizing they can’t actually be whatever they want to be — opposite Olivia Thirlby, Ari Graynor and Sigourney Weaver as directed by Susanna Fogel (who has also penned “Little Darlings” for producer J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot)

“Oh, you know about that?” Wood responded with a surprised laugh. “I had no idea that anyone knew about that [project]. So, yeah, that might be happening and it’s a comedy, which I’m really excited about because I’ve been looking forward to doing a fun comedy like that.”

“I’ve never had to answer a question about [that character] yet. I don’t know, I’m still figuring it out. We haven’t [shot] the movie [yet],” she laughed. “[My character’s] a smart, artistic person. She’s a very witty, fun girl. She’s just kind of a normal 24-year-old, but she’s different than most girls in that she’s slightly tougher and she has really big dreams. I think it’s really hard for her to find a person that can match her in a weird way. She’s very strong-willed.”

Her desire to stretch her abilities is evident. But comedic turns aren’t the only way Wood hopes to spread her wings in the near future. When asked if she’d ever consider playing a superhero, the actress answered with a clear affirmative. “I would totally be a superhero,” she said emphatically. “I really would actually. I never get offered superheroes and I never get offered comedies because people just have an idea of who I am as an actor.”

And Angelie Jolie should take heed, Wood thinks she’s be perfect for these kinds of jobs for very good reason. “I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do,” she clarified proudly. “I can kick butt. I wasn’t good at ballet and I was a fighter. I did it for years.” The actress says she doesn’t have a particular superhero in mind, but if future cast mate Sigourney Weaver could hook her up, something like her “Alien” heroine would fit the bill just fine. “I would love to do like a Ripley or a Sarah Connor, but they are few and far between.”

Evan Rachel Wood will next grace the big screen in “Ides Of March” opening on October 7th.
