Here's The Top-Grossing Baseball Movies, In Honor of "Moneyball"

In honor of the release of Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball” this weekend, indieWIRE is offering up this list of the top grossing baseball movies of all time.

If “Moneyball” – which stars Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Phillip Seymour Hoffman and is coming off some fantastic reviews at TIFF – wants to make its title all the more appropriate, it should aim for the benchmark set by 1992’s “A League of Their Own.” Penny Marshall’s fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League grossed $107,533,928 back in 1992, or $204,198,037 when adjusted for inflation. Starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell, it’s interesting that nearly 20 years later, a female-dominated baseball flick is still the genre’s #1 player.

In comparison to other sports genres, baseball pails in comparison to similar lists for football (where four films have grossed over $100 million, including top grossers “The Blind Side” and “The Waterboy”) and boxing (which also has four $100 million grossers, though three of them are from the “Rocky” franchise), but its top grosser certainly beats out the likes of golf (“Tin Cup” is tops in that genre, with $53.9 million), hockey (“Miracle,” with $64.4 million), basketball (“Space Jam,” with $90.4 million) and soccer (“Kicking and Screaming, with $52.8 million).

Here’s the overall top ten as far as baseball is concerned; figures are for North America only and not adjusted for inflation.

1. A League of Their Own (1992) – $107,533,928
2. The Rookie (2002) – $75,600,072
3. Field of Dreams (1989) – $64,431,625
4. The Benchwarmers (2006) – $59,843,754
5. Rookie of the Year (1993) – $53,615,089
6. Bull Durham (1988) – $50,888,729
7. Angels in the Outfield (1994) – $50,236,831
8. Major League (1989) – $49,797,148
9. The Natural (1984) – $47,951,979
10. Fever Pitch (2005) – $42,071,069
