iPOP On the Scene: Celebs, Directors & More at the Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival is well into its second half, with invitations to the TIFF awards brunch this coming Sunday. The festival opened September 8 with Davis Guggenheim’s “From the Sky Down,” the first in a number of music personalities, including Pearl Jam (with their doc “Pearl Jam Twenty” by Cameron Crowe) and none other than Madonna, with “W.E.” The local press has been abuzz over a bit of a faux pas… It’s alleged that Madge’s security detail told festival volunteers to turn their heads while the Material Girl walked away from the venue housing TIFF’s press conferences.

No shocker that the news didn’t go down too well once it spread, and the local news has run with the story for the last day or so. Though a spokesperson for Madonna (who did her second interview with indieWIRE this week, claimed a misunderstanding and said that Madonna thanks the volunteers.

At any rate, not everything is quite an upheaval though there are still throngs of people standing outside local (chic) hotels waiting to catch a glimpse of any star that may arrive or depart. People lined up outside Creme Brasserie restaurant in Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood for some glam watching. Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, David Cronenberg were among the guests at the dinner hosted by Sony Pictures Classics. The specialty distributor, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, put on a festival fete for its momentous occasion, and hosted their annual dinner.

Also celebrating their lineup at TIFF this week was IFC Films/Sundance Selects with a strong contingent from French speaking countries including filmmakers Dardenne brothers, Christophe Honoré, actor Louis Garrel, Bertrand Bonello and more.
