Kino Lorber Buys "Elles" and "Headshot" from Toronto and Cannes' Fortnight Winner "The Giants"

Kino Lorber has acquired US rights to “Elles” starring Juliette Binoche, which premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

The distributor also acquired US and Canadian rights to “The Giants,” which premiered in the Cannes 2011 Directors’ Fortnight, and to “Headshot,” which premiered at TIFF 2011 in the Vanguard section.

Kino Lorber plans to give all three films theatrical releases in 2011.

Directed by Polish filmmaker Malgoska Szumowska (“Happy Man,” “33 Scenes From Life”), “Elles” tells the story of a successful, Paris-based mother and investigative journalist for ELLE magazine (Juliette Binoche) who discovers the world of student prostitution. As she grows close to two of her subjects, she questions her own convictions about money, family, sex and identity.

French drama “The Giants,” directed by Bouli Lanners, received the Society of Auteurs and Dramatic Composers’ Prize as the Fortnight’s best French-language film as well as the Art Cinema Award. Thai actioner “Headshot,” directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang, is adapted from the novel “Rain Falling Up The Sky” and tells the story of a hitman who wakes after a two-month coma to find he sees everything upside down.

All three films were represented by Memento Films Intl.

The deals were negotiated between Kino Lorber president/CEO Richard Lorber and Tanja Meissner, head of international sales and acquisitions for Memento.
