Listen: Scarlett Johansson Covers "Bonnie & Clyde" With Lulu Gainsbourg

In the annals of actors-turned-musicians, Scarlett Johansson is actually better (and more underrated) than most. Her album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head, produced by TV On The Radio‘s Dave Sitek, is actually pretty good and in the various compilations or soundtracks she has contributed to Johansson is keenly aware that while she doesn’t have a particularly broad range, her strength lies in her woozy, sexy, husky delivery and with that, she does quite well with it.

Her latest musical effort to come to the fore finds her teaming with Lulu Gainsbourg (yes, Serge’s son) for a cover of the iconic “Bonnie & Clyde.” While there are many, many ways this song could’ve gone horribly awry, ScarJo and Lulu wisely play it straight, with the actress more than adequately filling in original vocals by Brigitte Bardot. Of course, it doesn’t trump Serge’s version and really, Lulu and ScarJo’s take isn’t all that memorable, but it’s a good homage to the legendary singer and one of his most famous songs.

The song will appear on the forthcoming disc From Lulu To Gainsbourg, a tribute album that will feature covers by a smattering of artists including Vanessa Paradis, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, Rufus Wainwright and Charlotte Gainsbourg. It hits stores on November 14th. But until then, get a sneak preview and check out “Bonnie & Clyde” below and then see how it stacks up against the original. [via THR]
