Michelle Williams Lands Best Actress Honor at Sham Hollywood Film Awards

Remember, The Hollywood Film Festival is not a respectable fall fest. It’s a well-timed award season facade which honors stars, filmmakers and craftspeople and lines the pockets of founder and internet magnate Carlos de Abreu. (Read all about it here.) But Hollywood players participate because the fest supports the award cause and provides vying Oscar contenders with yet another attention-grabbing red carpet showcase.

Thus the announcements of this year’s award recipients are flying fast. Two-time Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams is the latest celeb to be honored at the 15th annual Hollywood Film Festival for her portrayal of film icon Marilyn Monroe in Simon Curtis’ upcoming film My Week with Marilyn, which premieres at the New York Film Festival next week.

Williams will receive the honor on October 24 at the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony, presented by Starz Entertainment. The list of past actress honorees includes last year’s recipient Annette Bening, Hilary Swank, Kristin Scott Thomas, Marion Cotillard, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie. Other actors to be honored at this year’s Hollywood Awards Gala include Christopher Plummer for Hollywood Supporting Actor Award, Joseph Gordon Levitt for Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award, Jessica Chastain for Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award, and Felicity Jones for the New Hollywood Award.

Williams stars in two other 2011 films: the 1800s frontier western Meek’s Cutoff and contemporary domestic drama Take This Waltz, which recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. (Our interview with Williams on playing Marilyn, Meek’s Cutoff, and her Oscar-nominated role in 2010’s Blue Valentine is here.)
