Norway To Submit "Happy, Happy" for Foreign Language Oscar

First-time Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky’s film “Happy, Happy” has been chosen to represent Norway in the 2012 Oscar race for Foreign Language Film. The Norwegian Oscar Committee selected the film from a shortlist that included this year’s “Oslo, August 31st” and “Sons of Norway.”

“Happy, Happy” won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, and will be released stateside by Magnolia Pictures on September 16.

Anne Sewitsky’s Sundance winner is already sold for distribution in the US – among more than 50 other countries.

Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky’s feature debut, Happy, Happy (Sykt lykkelig) will be Norway’s Oscar candidate for Best Foreign-Language Feature, the Norwegian Oscar Committee announced today (Thursday, 1 September).

The committee selected Happy, Happy from a shortlist also including Norwegian directors Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st (Oslo, 31. august) and Jens Lien’s Sons of Norway (Sønner av Norge), both to be screened in Toronto.

Launched domestically in November 2010, the Synnøve Hørsdal production for Maipo was internationally discovered at the Sundance Film Festival in the US, where it received the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize.

Also screened in New York’s New Directors-New Films programme, it has been sold to more than 50 countries by TrustNordisk. Magnolia Pictures picked up American rights and will release the film on 16 September.

The drama-comedy scripted by Ragnhild Tronvoll stars Agnes Kittelsen, Henrik Rafaelsen, Maibritt Saerens and Joachim Rafaelsen. – A Maipo film has previously been nominated for an Oscar: Peter Næss’ Elling, in 2002.

The five candidates for the 2012 award will be announced on 24 January, ahead of the 26 February ceremony.
