TIFF Deals: The Lady, Wuthering Heights, Last Day on Earth, Your Sister's Sister

The late Toronto fest deals are flying fast and furious. Now IFC has closed two deals, for North and Latin American rights to Lynn Shelton’s well-reviewed relationship comedy Your Sister’s Sister, starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass, and North American rights for Abel Ferrara’s 4:44 Last Day on Earth. The New York-set film, starring Willem Dafoe, Shanyn Leigh, Paz de la Huerta, and Natasha Lyonne asks the questions, “how would we spend our final hours on Earth? And what does how we choose to die say about how we have chosen to live?” Next stop: The New York Film Festival. Here’s more. UPDATED.

Cohen Media Group has picked up rights to EuropaCorp mogul Luc Besson’s true story The Lady, starring Michelle Yeoh as Burmese Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. While it’s a well-made, heartfelt biopic, The Lady does not have Oscar nominations in the bag. It will need better reviews than it has received so far, even if David Thewlis gives a heartbreaking, revelatory performance as the pacifist leader’s husband. More on post-Toronto Oscar standings later.

Andrea Arnold’s adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights has gone to Oscilloscope for North American distribution. Arnold directed Michael Fassbender in her acclaimed Fish Tank (premiered at Cannes, 2009), alongside Katie Jarvis, before he was everywhere. Wuthering Heights stars newcomers Kaya Scodelario and James Howson. Premiering at Venice, Wuthering Heights won Best Cinematography before heading over to Toronto, where Oscilloscope grabbed the period piece for a theatrical release in 2012. The Guardian calls it “a beautiful rough beast of a movie.”
