"Homeland" Preview: Who's Lying in Tonight's Episode?

The catchphrase on House may be “Everybody lies,” but that fades into nothingness next to the deceit all around on Homeland, Showtime’s increasingly twisty drama, with Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, the obsessed and possibly delusional CIA officer who thinks Sgt Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) is not a rescued war hero but a terrorist sleeper just waiting for his alarm to go off.

Brody is brought into the CIA in tonight’s episode so he can identify the man who guarded him as a prisoner of war. When he asks Carrie if the man will be tortured, she instantly snaps, “We don’t do that here.” But then, “Everybody …” Well we’ll see what happens.

Actually, I have seen the episode and I can tell you it has a stunning twist. So far we’ve been led toward the idea that Carrie is overreacting, and tonight’s story shifts the evidence heavily in one direction.

Homeland plays with the high-stakes, visceral fear of more terror attacks, but its dramatic strength also comes from its slick, unrelenting suspense, and its sense of the complicated, fraught family crises so tangled up with the Carrie-Brody cat-and-mouse game. As tonight’s episode ends, Carrie’s nieces and Brody’s son appear with them in neatly parallel, central scenes.

Here’s a glimpse at the episode.
