Jackson will Direct Next Tintin Along with The Hobbit; Secret of the Unicorn Opens Abroad October 26

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn opens abroad this week (the U.S. waits until December 21), so what better time to confirm that producer Peter Jackson will direct the second installment of the franchise? Most critics have been pretty high on the commercial-looking performance capture action movie, whether or not they have a history with Hergé‘s comics, so a second Tintin is a safe bet.

Director Steven Spielberg said at Comic-Con that they are all but ready to go, stating that Sony and Paramount “were willing to do one movie with us and then give us the financial werewithal to develop a script, do all the visual storyboards and get it really in launch position. So we can launch pretty quickly on a second movie. The script is already written.”

The story by Anthony Horowitz based on the Herge comics Prisoners of the Sun and The Seven Crystal Balls will involve Professor Calculus, Jackson and Spielberg confirmed at Comic-Con. Jackson said that he loved seeing Spielberg’s “childish” enthusiastic creative looseness, while Spielberg appreciated Jackson’s calmness under fire and expediency in problem solving. There was “no ego,” Spielberg said.

While you’d think Jackson has his hands full with finishing his Hobbit films, remember that these performance capture movies take a long time and don’t follow your standard live action trajectory. Designing and creating the digital characters and environments can get started as soon as Jackson gets a green light–which will likely occur as soon as the movie rakes in some cash overseas. Knowing multitasker Spielberg, while he did not confirm his involvement as a producer on the sequel–and is busy with his own Lincoln and Robopocalypse–he will likely keep his hand in.
