John Cusack Replaces Ethan Hawke On Kasper Barfoed's 'The Numbers Station' With Malin Akerman

A bit of an acting substitution here for a gestating indie-flick with John Cusack now replacing original star/producer Ethan Hawke as the lead in Kasper Barfoed‘s upcoming action-thriller “The Numbers Station,” which also stars Malin Akerman. Hawke joined the project last fall when it was gearing up for early 2011 shoot, but that didn’t come to pass. But with Cusack now on board, things are beginning to movie again.

It almost marks two consecutive projects now that Cusack has replaced a departing actor after he took on the role of Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue‘s “The Raven” when original star Jeremy Renner exited. Here, he’ll team with Barfoed, who was previously at the helm of Danish-language pics “The Candidate” and “The Lost Treasure Of The Knights Templar.”

Penned by F. Scott Frazier, the thriller finds Cusack playing a disgraced black ops agent tasked with a dead-end job of protecting a code operator for an isolated covert CIA broadcast station played by Akerman. Fairly generic premise, right? Perhaps there’s more to the tale, but we’ll soon find out as lensing will kick off in mid-November, presumably just after the American Film Market where the producers will go to rep the rights to the movie.

On top of that, Cusack is set for a big 2012 with a number of films scheduled to unveil including Lee Daniel‘s adaptation of “The Paperboy” starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron as well as the lesser likes of Morgan O’Neill‘s “The Factory,” Scott Walker‘s “The Frozen Ground” with Nicholas Cage, Vanessa Hudgens and 50 Cent and Alejandro Agresti‘s “Limbo.”
