Magnolia Picks Up 'Take This Waltz' With Michelle Williams & Seth Rogen For Summer 2012 Release

Five years after the excellent drama “Away From Her,” Sarah Polley delivered her sophomore directorial effort “Take This Waltz,” premiering it to critics and audiences at TIFF last month and the reception was mixed. Described by James Rocchi — who gave the movie an A grade review — as “a modernist version of a late ‘60s or early ‘70s relationship film,” the film stars Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, as a young couple who struggle with monogamy and fidelity, as the former is torn between her husband and a new man. Sarah Silverman and Luke Kirby round out the film that has been described as sexually frank (and somewhat explicit), but bracingly honest about the complex emotions that arise out of sex and love. Frankly, it sounds right up our alley and though it took a bit longer than we thought to happen, the movie now has a U.S. distribution deal in place, though we’ll have to wait until next year to see it.

Magnolia Pictures announced this afternoon that they have landed the movie, with a plan is to release it next summer, and the distributor promising “a robust theatrical release” in addition to their usual VOD rollout. But you may be able to catch it earlier as the film will continue to travel to various festivals across the country, and if you’re in Montreal this weekend, you can catch it at the Festival Du Nouveau Cinema.

No exact date yet, but we’re glad “Take This Waltz” has found a home. We were big fans of Polley’s previous effort and we’re eager to see what she does here with a bigger budget and a starrier cast. For those of you north of the border, Mongrel Media will be releasing the movie in a theater near you.
