So last night my third Blackberry Torch is just over a year became no more. On my last night here in New York, I had the pleasure of being pickpocketed at a bar in the East Village (though thankfully only my phone fell victim, which I’ll take over a wallet or a passport anyday). This marks my second stolen Torch (the other time I will only say that I was indeed at fault), and frankly the last one. I held out on the iPhone for years with lame excuses like “I like my smartphone simple… I don’t need a computer in my hand I spend enough time on my laptop” or “I like supporting Canadian companies!” But it seems like the time has come. In the meantime, though, I’ll remain phoneless. Which I’ve done before, once even for a few weeks… And I always find it to be an interesting experiment that makes it clear how addicted to it I’ve become. The first day or two I actually get anxious and intensely jealous at the sight of other people on their phones, and constantly check my pocket in case somehow I’ve overlooked a phone being there a few hundred times. But by day three or four, I feel pretty free and liberated. My hope is that when I finally get the nerve to quit smoking, the process will be similar.
