Toronto’s “Nuit #1” Picked up by Adopt Films

Toronto's "Nuit #1" Picked up by Adopt Films

U.S. rights to 2011 Toronto film, “Nuit #1” by Canadian filmmaker, Anne Émond have been picked up by new distribution company, Adopt Films. The company plans a release in late July, 2012.

Full acquisition release follows:

New distribution company Adopt Films has announced its acquisition of all US rights to one of the most highly regarded films that premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Canadian filmmaker Anne Émond’s first feature film, Nuit #1. Nuit #1 was one of a cluster of erotically charged films introduced at Toronto that will open theatrically in 2012. Adopt Co-Managing Executive Jeff Lipsky negotiated the deal with Paris-based WIDE Management’s Head of International Sales & Acquisitions Clémentine Hugot.

Of Nuit #1 Adopt’s Lipsky said, “Anne’s stunningly successful debut film is impossibly smart, raw, and sexy. Its emotional tendrils draw the audience in and hold them in their grIp like few others. Anne is truly a formidable and exciting new talent. We expect Nuit #1 is going to have moviegoing couples leaving pheromone trails in theatres all summer long, and hope that Nuit #1 marks the first success in a fruitful and ongoing collaboration between Adopt Films and Ms. Émond.”

Nuit #1 is part of WIDE Management’s Label Eye on Films series, an international network of films designed for both festivals and distributors, whose aim is to foster first and second time filmmakers whose work demonstrates exceptional directorial skill, and to nurture those of their films that boast significant worldwide potential.

Anne Émond’s dazzling debut feature is a bold and intimate study of a one-night stand. Young actors Catherine De Léan and Dimitri Storoge play a couple who meet at a rave and end their night at his apartment. The first part of the film is an erotic and candid portrait of their lovemaking. They continue to talk until dawn, often in uninterrupted, brutally honest monologues. Clara (De Léan) and Nikolai (Storoge) learn as much about each other in a few hours as some learn over the course of a long-term relationship. The power struggles of a couple play out, almost dance-like, in this one night. In a world of technology-mediated contact and fleeting encounters, Nuit #1 is a cathartic chamber piece about two modern young people whose physical trust goes much deeper.

Nuit #1 was written and directed by Ms. Émond and was produced by Nancy Grant for Metafilms.

Nuit #1 represents Adopt Films’ second acquisition of a widely-heralded 2011 film festival success. The first, Marie Losier’s Berlin Film Festival award-winning documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, will open on March 8th. Nuit #1 will be scheduled for a late July opening.
