“Young Adult,” the second Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody collaboration, has dropped its first trailer. The movie poster was seriously kick-ass; the cast was awesome. It seemed like one of the year’s biggest indie comedies. But now that we’ve seen this trailer, we’re not so sure that “comedy” is the word to use here.
First of all, remember the first trailer for “Juno”? Say what you will about that movie, but that first trailer really showcased the movie’s likability, humor and heart. This time, the jokes just seem depressing. Perhaps Cody and Reitman have lost their touch? Or maybe this movie has something up its sweatshirt sleeve that the trailer isn’t showing?
It’s nice to see Charlize Theron in crazy mode again, but this kind of crazy Charlize just comes across awkwardly. She’s playing an openly desperate and depressed teen fiction author who returns home to get her married high-school sweetheart back, seemingly unaware that it’s hard to fall in love with someone who is openly desperate and depressed.
