Watch: Glenn Close Guns for Oscar in Trailer for "Albert Nobbs"

Glenn Close comes off well in the trailer for her long in the works passion project “Albert Nobbs.” The film? Not so much.

Blame that to a preview that starts out hinting at a broad British comedy, veers towards the dramatic somewhere near the 1-minute mark and then goes all icky feel-good by the end.

Judging from the reviews out of Venice and Toronto, the film directed by Rodrigo Garcia (“Mother & Child”) is a straight up drama with Close in Oscar-contender form as penniless woman who poses as man so she can work as butler in 19th century Ireland. The rest of the cast is pretty exceptional (Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Brendan Gleeson, Janet McTeer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Pauline Collins and Brenda Fricker), but this is Close’s show. Close first starred in an off-Broadway adaptation of the short story on which “Nobbs” is based back in 1982, so this has been a long time coming for the actress. From the looks of it, we’re in for a treat of a performance. Hopefully the same can be said for the film.

Roadside Attractions is opening “Nobbs” in limited release on January 27.
