‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake To Get Sweaty In Cinemas On July 26, 2013

'Dirty Dancing' Remake To Get Sweaty In Cinemas On July 26, 2013

Well, with “Footloose” opening at number two and earning (to date) $45 million at the box office, it’s a modest success for the low budget film, one that proves that a) 1980s “classics” are not sacred and b) at least not sacred enough that people won’t pay to see them remade. This summer, original “Dirty Dancing” choreographer Kenny Ortega was brought on to direct the remake and now the stakes are raised, because he’s getting a juicy summer release date.

Lionsgate has gone ahead and slotted “Dirty Dancing” with a July 26, 2013 date. Right now, there is not much in the way of competition with only Disney‘s “Phineas and Ferb” arriving on the same weekend, but it does thrown down the gauntlet in a big way. Clearly, they want this to be big and giving it a superhero sized slot takes some massive, hairy cojones. But in the world of dance movies, “Dirty Dancing” is right at the top and if they can appeal to the same folks who fell in love with the original the first time around, and get some younger folks in to see it to, then they will definitely have a winner on their hands. It can also be viewed as interesting counter-programming option, against what will sure to be yet another explosion, sequel filled summer.

Ortega’s film won’t quite be a carbon copy, as he plans to use 1960s music and some new songs, in addition to taking some of tunes from the 1987 movie as well. But we swear to God, if they get someone to remake “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” we’re gonna burn something to the ground. No word yet on who will fill the shoes of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, but good luck to them. [THR]
