Elizabeth Olsen & Glenn Close To Star In Period Drama ‘Therese Raquin’

Elizabeth Olsen & Glenn Close To Star In Period Drama 'Therese Raquin'

Even though they migth be battling each other for Best Actress in a few short months at the Oscars for their performances in “Albert Nobbs” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” Elizabeth Olsen and Glenn Close won’t let that spoil any chance of the fresh faced next generation new wave actress and the respected old guard veteran from working together on a movie.

According to EW, the pair will star in “Therese Raquin,” an adaptation of the novel and play by Emilie Zola. The story is as old as time. Trapped in loveless marriage, a young woman enters a passionate affair with her husband’s best friend, with events leading a tragic outcome. Olsen will play the role of Therese, who is forced by her Aunt Madame Raquin (Close) to marry her first cousin. Charlie Stratton has adapted the novel and will making his directorial debut on the picture, and considering the talent he’s pulled together, we’re betting it’s a strong piece of work.

The production is gearing up to shoot in the spring, but it’s not the first time “Therse Raquin” will have been brought to either the big or small screen. It has been adaptated numerous times for television, most notably for a “Masterpiece Theater” mini-series starring Kate Nelligan and Brian Cox. It was also made into a film by the great Marcel Carne (“Children Of Paradise“) back in 1953 with Simone Signoret in the lead. But you can’t really argue with Olsen and Close joining forces here, particularly as they are both currently riding huge waves. Let’s hope this film keeps them on top.
