Academy Unveils Dull New Oscar Poster

The Academy has unveiled a rather unimaginative poster for the 84th Academy Awards with the tagline: “Celebrate the movies in all of us.” On the poster, the iconic Oscar statuette is surrounded by images from Oscar-winners representing eight decades, including “Gone with the Wind” (1939), “Casablanca” (1943), “The Sound of Music” (1965), “The Godfather” (1972), “Driving Miss Daisy” (1989), “Forrest Gump” (1994) and “Gladiator” (2000). Only “Giant” (1956) did not win Best Picture; George Stevens won Best Director.

While the Oscars are Hollywood’s ultimate marketing tool, this poster, designed by veteran ad art creator Anthony Goldschmidt and Blood&Chocolate’s Mark and Karen Crawford, is a tad too obvious. “Whether it’s a first date or a holiday gathering with friends or family, movies are a big part of our memory,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy Awards not only honor the excellence of these movies, but also celebrate what they mean to us as a culture and to each of us individually.”

The poster is available to global theaters and downloadable on the Academy’s website. An Oscar trailer will start screening on January 6.
