Dan Aykroyd Joins Will Ferrell & Zach Galifianakis In Political Comedy 'Dog Fight'

There’s one major problem that Jay Roach‘s political comedy “Dog Fight” faces next year: if the Republican debates have been anything to go by, there’s no way that the film, produced by Adam McKay and starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as a pair of rival South Carolina politicians, can hope to live up to the absurdity and sheer hilarity of the primary season that kicks off in only a few weeks. Even the comic brains behind Ron Burgundy surely couldn’t come up with a world in which Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are genuine front-runners in a presidential race, right?

Still, there’s plenty of comic pedigree behind the film, with a cast not just including Ferrell and Galifianakis, but also Jason Sudeikis, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Dylan McDermott, Will Forte and P.J. Byrne. And just to make sure, the film has added one more ringer, as according to Moviehole, veteran star Dan Aykroyd has joined the cast of the film.

Obviously a giant star back in the day thanks to “Saturday Night Live,” “Trading Places” and “Ghostbusters,” among many others, Aykroyd’s been more visible as a paranomal enthusiast, vodka-seller and needy advocate for “Ghostbusters 3” than he has been on the big screen, with the vocal turn in “Yogi Bear” and a supporting performance in “We Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” being his best known recent appearances, but we’re pleased to see Ferrell & co embracing the older generation of SNL graduates.

His late casting (the film’s been shooting for a month or two) suggests it won’t be much more than a cameo, but it’s good to see him get back in the presidential game he established with his famous Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon impressions on SNL back in the day. There’s no word on the exact nature of the role, but we’ll likely find out when “Dog Fight” hits theaters on August 10, 2012.
