Brit Noel Clarke Has Sights Set On Hollywood With Upcoming Projects

Brit renaissance man (director, writer, actor, producer, playwright, and who knows what else) Noel Clarke, who we’ve given a lot of pixels to on this site since it was started in 2009, is one really busy fellow, doing just about everything it seems; and as I noted in a pervious post, I’d say he’s maybe the most prominent black British movie talent who’s still relatively unknown outside the UK – specifically here in the USA.

We all know about Idris Elba, Sophie Okonedo, Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and others; but Clarke seems to have reserved himself strictly for UK audiences. Unlike his contemporaries, I don’t believe he’s starred in, or directed a single American studio-made and distributed film project (not that he has to, by the way), and he seems to be doing just fine in the UK, despite all the chatter about the so-called UK talent drain as black British talent heads west to Hollywood where better opportunities apparently await them.

But Clarke isn’t resting on his laurels; he definitely has his eye on Hollywood and success in the American marketplace, as he indicated in an interview with Science Fiction Zone (Clarke has a sci-fi horror film in development currently, which should be out in 2012).

When asked whether he makes it to the USA much, Clarke answered: “I try to make it to the States twice a year. I have written several scripts and directed two feature movies, and right now my goal is to continue pressing forward with that. I am slowly clawing my way over.

And when further pressed for info on what possible Hollywood projects he might already have on his upcoming slate, he said this: “Ehh…I have a few plates spinning in the air at the moment that I think you will be hearing about in the near future.

So one of his goal is to eventually head to the USA and make films here, and he apparently has some stateside-produced/financed/distributed projects we’ll be hearing about soon.

Already on his slate are a sci-fi horror film called Storage 24, a rom-com titled The Knot, a sports drama called Fast Girls, and a yet-to-be-titled MMA feature, all of which are to be released in 2012. There’s also a UK version of Bad Boys he and Ashley Walters are said to be developing (the script is written).

So as other Brit talents say they are facing challenges getting projects produced, Clarke seems to be having very little diffculty, whatever the reasons are.

None of Clarke’s films (those he wroter/directed and/or produced) has received a theatrical release in the USA, though you’ll find Kidulthood and Adulthood, his earlier works, on DVD/streaming.

We’ll be watching.

I’m working to get an interview with him.
