Common Joins Louis Leterrier's Magician Heist Movie 'Now You See Me'

While making the rounds for his Sundance drama “LUV,” rapper/actor/chick magnet Common told Movieline (via Shadow & Act) that he’s joined the cast of Louis Leterrier‘s awesome-sounding magician heist movie “Now You See Me.” “I’m about to film this movie called ‘Now You See Me,’ which stars Jesse Eisenberg and Isla Fisher and Michael Caine and Mark Ruffalo – I’d say it’s an action movie, about these magicians,” Common told Movieline. “It’s dope.” Dope indeed!

The movie, described as a thriller in which magicians pull off heists during their shows and give the money to the audience, is shaping up to have a pretty stellar cast. Along with the actors Common mentioned, the movie also stars his “Wanted” costar Morgan Freeman, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson (who said he wasn’t quite sure about the movie when we spoke to him late last year, but he seems to have put those reservations aside) and Melanie Laurent. Since there is a cat-and-mouse element to the story (the illusionists are being tracked by a squad of FBI agents), it’s unclear which side of the law Common will rest on. But either way this movie sounds really, really cool.

Even more promising: the last batch of script rewrites were performed by Josh Abbelbaum and Andre Nemec, who were largely responsible for the crackling “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” screenplay, and Letterier, when he gets his way, is a competent action stylist. We hope that the final movie will deliver a fraction of the awesomeness of the premise, and with great character actors like Common on board, they’re close to achieving that goal. “Now You See Me” hits theaters just over a year from now, on January 18th, 2013.
