Fox Searchlight Gets 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'

After days of speculation, Fox Searchlight has acquired U.S. rights to “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Benh Zeitlin’s feature debut has been the talk of the festival since it premiered last Friday; at one point five companies vied to buy it.

The film, which follows an intrepid six-year-old’s (Quvenzhane Wallis) life in the southern Delta with her father, is in the US Dramatic Competition section and is a strong contender for end-of-festival awards.

The deal was done by WME.

This is Searchlight’s second buy in as many days. Last night they acquired the John Hawkes/Helen Hunt-starrer, “The Surrogate.”
