IN THE WORKS: Tommy Lee Jones Joins Peter Webber's Post-WW II Thriller 'Emperor' Starring Matthew Fox UPDATED

Tommy Lee Jones joins Peter Webber’s currently filming political thriller set in Japan, “Emperor.” The post-Word War II historical drama stars “Lost”‘s Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers, a Japanese expert for General Douglas MacArthur (Jones), who must decide whether or not to try Emperor Hirohito as a war criminal. Meanwhile Fellers searches for his former lover Aya, a one-time Japanese exchange student, in ravaged post-war Japan.

Webber is a gifted director who has not yet fulfilled the promise of his breakout feature film debut, 2003’s “The Girl with a Pearl Earring,” starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson, which earned three Oscar nominations. At first Webber refused to be classified as a Brit period director, and went on to direct episodes of “Six Feet Under” for HBO as well as a forgettable Dino De Laurentiis prequel, “Hannibal Rising.”

‘Emperor’ started principal photography on January 12 in Japan, with locations in New Zealand. Foreign sales are being handled by CAA.

Based on a screenplay by David Klass (“Walking Tall,” “Desperate Measures”) and Vera Blasi (“Woman on Top,” “Tortilla Soup”), “Emperor” is a Fellers Film and Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment co-production produced by Yoko Narahashi (“The Last Samurai”), Gary Foster (“Daredevil,” “Sleepless in Seattle”), Eugene Nomura (“Tajomaru”) and Russ Krasnoff (“The Soloist”).
