Oscar Watch: Cinema Audio Society and Costume Designers Guild Select Nominees, Skip 'War Horse'

The Costume Designers Guild and The Cinema Audio Society (CAS) have announced their 2011 nominees.

Some 750 members of the Costume Designers Guild select films in contemporary, fantasy and period categories; winners will be announced at the society’s 14th annual gala on February 21, hosted by Jane Lynch, at the Beverly Hilton. The most likely overlap with Oscar nominations are in the period category, including “The Artist,” “Jane Eyre” and “The Help.” Sandy Powell (“Hugo”) and Arianne Phillips (“W.E.”) have both been nominated by the Guild three times. It is telling that Steven Spielberg’s period “War Horse” did not get a nomination.

“War Horse” is also a no-show among the CAS nominees for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2011, in four film and TV categories. The sound mixing Oscar often goes to elaborate big-budget pictures, so the inclusion of “Moneyball” and “Hanna” here is a surprise, along with more expected nominees “Hugo,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Super 8.”

The Awards will be presented at a dinner on February 18th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The Cinema Audio Society website will update the awards in real time as the winners are announced.
