Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds will star as Margaret and Walter Keane, the 1960s artists who gained worldwide fame for their paintings of watercolored gothic waifs, in Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski’s “Big Eyes.”
Lynette Howell and Jamie Patricof will produce through Electric City Entertainment, with Tim Burton producing via Tim Burton Prods. Karaszewski and Alexander previously worked with Burton on “Ed Wood.”
The film is expected to begin production in the spring. Alexander and Karaszewski’s screenplay details the strange world of the Keanes, in which Margaret did the paintings in obscurity while Walter took the credit and the fame. She finally won the rights to her work in divorce proceedings by painting in front of the judge, while her husband would not do the same.
Alexander and Karaszewski have been developing “Big Eyes” for years. In 2008, the project was slated to star Kate Hudson and Thomas Haden Church and be produced by Dan Halsted, Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa, with financing by Andrew Meieran.
