Sandra Bullock Says Alfonso Cuaron Insisted On No Makeup For The Actors In ‘Gravity’

Sandra Bullock Says Alfonso Cuaron Insisted On No Makeup For The Actors In 'Gravity'

Even though he’s been twice voted by People magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive, it looks like you’re going to see George Clooney at his rawest. As if Alfonso Cuaron‘s 3D space thriller “Gravity” wasn’t already ambitious enough, he’s gone ahead and given the marketing department a headache by insisting on uglying up his actors.

USA Today caught up with Sandra Bullock a couple of weeks ago and she spilled the beans on the director’s approach to his beautiful lead actors. “God help us all when my face comes rushing at you with no makeup on. I’m going to apologize now, but Alfonso, in a brilliant move, said, ‘No makeup,’ ” she explained. And yeah, it does make a lot of sense. Set on a remote space station, the story begins as a team of astronauts are on an expedition outside the station, but only the team leader (Clooney) and his female colleague (Bullock) are left alive after an exploding satellite kills the other members of the crew, setting off a desperate race home for the latter to get to her child. In short, Cuaron has avoided the typical Hollywood convention that still makes sure a star’s hair and eyeshadow is perfectly in place even during the most dire of circumstances. If anything, the gambit should bring an added dose of realism to the proceedings.

“Our vain little heads are going to be some massive 17-foot image. You are going to see details because it’s shot on this digital film that shows everything. It’s so scary. There are scenes where you say, ‘This is where you have to let go and let God.’ And, thank God, there are no nude scenes,” Bullock added.

The movie has been pretty tightly under wraps, though Clooney did say during the fall that a cut has already screened for the studio. As for the rest of us, “Gravity” will arrive on November 21, 2012.
