Sundance Buy: Sony Pictures Classics Acquires 'Searching for Sugar Man'

Sony Pictures Classics made the first buy of the festival, acquiring the North American rights to doc “Searching for Sugar Man,” the directorial debut of Malik Bendjelloul.  The film had its world premiere last night at Sundance, where it was the opening night film for the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

“Searching for Sugar Man” is based on the story of Sixto Diaz Rodriguez (known simply as Rodriguez), an American folk musician whose brief career fizzled into obscurity in the 1970s.  A bootleg copy of one of his recordings made its way to South Africa, where he became a huge success.  Bendjelloul’s film follows the two South African fans who make it their mission to find out who the mysterious Rodriquez really is.
