Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist” and Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” led the winners 69th Golden Globe Awards, each winning a best picture prize and a best actor prize.
“The Artist” topped the best picture – musical or comedy – category, and also nabbed a best actor trophy for Jean Dujardin (also in musical or comedy) and a nod for best musical score. It lost best director, however, to Martin Scorsese (for “Hugo”).
“The Descendants” won in the drama category, and took a best actor award for George Clooney, where he topped his buddie Brad Pitt. The two will compete against Dujardin for a fairly contested best actor Oscar.
The Weinstein Company did exceptionally well at the awards. Besides the 3 “Artist” trophies, it took both best actress honors, including Meryl Streep for “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn.” The two will compete against Viola Davis in another three-way Oscar race.
“Beginners” actor Christopher Plummer continued the road to winning his very first Oscar by taking best supporting actor at the Globes, as did Octavia Spencer, who won best supporting actress for “The Help.”
Other winners included “A Separation” (best foreign language film), “The Artist” (for best original score) and “W.E.” (for best original song.. notably another Weinstein pic).
