The Loving Story, which I’ve been following since it was a work-in-progress, premieres on HBO tonight. To say that this documentary is about Mildred and Richard Loving, the interracial couple who were arrested and forced to leave Virginia in the 1950’s, and whose Supreme Court case finally struck down anti-miscegenation laws, doesn’t begin to suggest how beautifully the film is made.
Director Nancy Buirski creates a sense of great intimacy, telling the story through amazing archival footage, including film of the Lovings themselves. Calm and poised, Mildred Loving has the voice of an angel, and is the strong center of the film. That period footage of the Lovings and their children, at home and with their lawyers, is surrounded by recent interviews with their daughter and with the two lawyers who argued the case. .
Here’s Buirski’s scene analysis from Indiewire today.
And take a look at the trailer for the film, which was short-listed for the Oscar for Best Documentary.
