Dog Wars: Scorsese Defends Blackie

I’m not a dog person, so I don’t really have an animal in this fight. But I have to agree with the Uggie backlash, which took off when Christopher Plummer pointed out – quite rightly I think – that Cosmo from Beginners is a much cuter dog. Now Martin Scorsese is getting into the act, defending Blackie from Hugo on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

As Scorsese points out – in  a tongue-in-cheek way that is also true – Blackie isn’t the prettiest dog around but he has more depth. And while Uggie from The Artist has been making publicity stops and getting all the doggie press, it’s worth reminding people what his fans choose to ignore: Uggie had stunt doubles, named Dash and Dude. Reportedly the star did most of his own stunts, but isn’t that what they always say?
